Panthers’ Steve Smith Donates $100,000 To Victims Of Aurora Shooting

Steve Smith didn’t grow up in Colorado and he didn’t know any of the victims of the Aurora shooting. Still, like most of America, the Carolina Panthers wide receiver was devastated after 12 people lost their lives at the premiere of the Dark Knight Rises.

The LA Times reports that Smith has decided to donate $100,000 to the victims of the shooting.

Smith said that his eldest son Peyton was also at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at the time of the shooting. Peyton was hundreds of miles away in North Carolina but Smith said that the shooting still hit him hard.

Smith said:

“I can’t imagine getting someone severely injured, one, and then, two, trying to figure out how to pay for it…. Economic times are tough right now and [my family] has the means to do it… We have a chance to lead and hopefully other people will see that…. People get prideful and say, ‘Hey, this guy did that. Why don’t I do more?’ … I don’t think it’s a publicity job, I think it’s a chance for people to think about what are you here for. Are you here to store up your treasures or are you going to give it to people who are obviously in need?”

Smith also released a statement via the Carolina Panthers’ official Twitter feed.
