Manchester United must fight for survival against Danish Superliga champions FC Midtjylland in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League Last 32 eliminator tie, in a match that will stream live on Thursday from Old Trafford. Manchester United, who look unlikely to qualify for Champions League play through their Premier League finish this season, will see all hope lost if they fail to overcome a 2-1 deficit in their showdown with Midtjylland.
Under Manager Louis Van Gaal, United have regressed from their rebound season in 2014-2015 in which they placed fourth in the Premier League, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League once again after missing out in the previous season — for the first time in 19 years.
Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League with 12 games remaining, United trails fourth-place Manchester City by six points, a sizable gap to cross if they plan to squeeze in to the final Champions League qualification spot.
But for the second year running, the Europa League title carries with it the grand prize of an automatic place in the following season’s edition of the more prestigious and lucrative top-flight European tournament.
After crashing out of this year’s Champions League at the group stage, United entered the lower-level competition at the Round of 32 knockout phase — and immediately dropped their first game away to a lightly-regarded Midtjylland side who now occupy third place in the Danish league and barely escaped the Europa League group stage, placing second behind Napoli who outscored Midtjylland 9-1 in two group stage matches.

Britain’s Daily Mail called the shock defeat at MCH Arena in Herning, Denmark, “one of (United’s) greatest humiliations in Europe,” dismissing Midtjylland as “a bad Scrabble hand of a team when compared to the aristocrats of European football.”

Manchester United, who scored an away goal in Herning, need to win 1-0, or if they allow a goal to Midtjylland, win the match outright. But they must do so without goalkeeper David De Gea, who will miss his third straight match with an injury sustained during warm-ups before the first leg on Thursday of last week.
Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Darmian are all also suffering from injuries that could keep them off the pitch on Thursday, making Manchester United’s job all that much harder.
“If we beat Manchester United over two legs, it will be a bit of a miracle,” said Midtjylland sporting director Claus Steinlein on Wednesday. “Now we believe we can beat them and I’m sure we will go there and do it.”
