‘Facebook Official’ Is A Thing Of The Past, Now There’s The Facebook Breakup Tool

It’s been said many times that Facebook is among the many social networks that make breaking up more difficult than it was in the old days. This is because even after the relationship is over, you still have the other person’s life plastered in front of your face at every key stroke and screen scroll. Now, Facebook has developed a tool that would eliminate exes from news feeds. In a recent announcement, Facebook revealed just how they plan to implement this new feature.

“When people change their relationship status to indicate they are no longer in a relationship, they will be prompted to try these tools.”

The question that arises as Facebook takes on this new experiment, is whether or not it will actually work. Because the social network is all about sharing moments with friends, it’s more likely than not that you and your ex have mutual friends. The first option that Facebook provides is to simply limit your exposure to your ex’s Facebook life. Limiting exposure may prove to be unhelpful when you ex is tagged in the posts and photos of your friends. This is when Facebook’s new tools become the most handy, as the company has found a way to limit your view of your ex’s interactions with other people you are connected with. According to Facebook, you won’t even have to see that person’s name.

“Their posts won’t show up in News Feed and their name won’t be suggested when people write a new message or tag friends in photos.”

Facebook is known as the one social network that actually legitimizes relationships in the modern age, as the phrase “we’re Facebook official,” has become widely used. It only makes sense that Facebook would also trail blaze the online breakup statuses as well. If limiting exposure to your ex on Facebook and limiting photos, videos, and statuses that your ex can see isn’t enough, you can choose the third breakup option, which basically masks their very presence in your life. By removing you from posts that they tagged you in and deleting photos of you together, it will be like the never existed. Facebook, with ambition, stated that they planned to begin implementing the breakup tool immediately, and so far most people are excited.

“We’re starting to test these tools today in the US on mobile, and we’ll make changes and roll them out further based on people’s feedback. All of these tools are optional, and people will be able to access them in the help center anytime.”

The new breakup tool from Facebook may also be a way to keep the ex couple open to rekindle their affections. Before this tool, according to the Tech Times, the only way to eliminate you ex from your news feed was to delete them as a friend on Facebook. With the social network’s new breakup tool, you never have to deleted your ex, and thus will never have to live through the embarrassment that comes with requesting them as a friend again when your finally over the breakup. Facebook’s product manager, Kelly Winters, is optimistic about the breakup tool.

“This work is part of our ongoing effort to develop resources for people who may be going through difficult moments in their lives. We hope these tools will help people end relationships on Facebook with greater ease, comfort and sense of control.”
