Just months after India fell in the semifinals of the Cricket World Cup, the team has started a tour of Zimbabwe minus some of their best-known players. But even the lesser squad has been able to rack up victories, including a 54-run win in the first T20 international match.

The teams will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. local time (11 a.m. GMT) for their second match.

If the match is anything like the first T20, there may not be much tension. The margin of victory was the third-largest for India in a T20 match.

As ESPNcricinfo noted, the win was a combination of strong batting and mistakes from Zimbabwe:

“India’s batting was propelled by reasonable contributions by the top four, and despite slowing down in the middle stages, managed to find an extra gear to ransack 96 runs in the last 10 overs. Zimbabwe let themselves down by conceding 25 extras – the fourth-most in an innings in T20 internationals – and some sloppy fielding.

The home side weren’t helping themselves with some nervy bowling that resulted in a rash of wides – there were 13 in all – and a tendency to stray down the leg side. Debutants Taurai Muzarabani and Neville Madziva were bullied with after Chigumbura probably erred by introducing them too early in the piece. Muzarabani, brought on in the third over, went for nine runs, while Madziva conceded ten in the very next over.”

But even losses like the one suffered in the first T20 match are important for a growing Zimbabwe team, noted their coach, Dav Whatmore.

“We honestly thought we should have won [more games],” Whatmore said. “When you get so close, and you don’t, I think psychologically it becomes a little bit greater when you play the next one.

“We’ve got the potential, as you can see, we just need to transform our ability into performance, and that comes from here. It takes a bit of time. If you look at the history of Zimbabwe cricket over the last four years, if you’ve done your research you’ll know that we’ve only played a handful of games.”

“And to improve you need to go through certain situations more often. So hopefully boys will learn as quickly as possible, because we are now playing competition which we haven’t had in the past.”
