Michael Mann Registers 14,962 Domains In 24 Hours

CNET reports that Michael Mann, who lucked out selling a $70 domain for $50,000 in the 1990s, went on a domain name buying spree as he picked up 14,962 domains in a less than 24 hour period. After all was said and done, the cost of his spending spree was around $100,000.

Why buy such a ridiculous number of domain names? Mann’s current company, DomainMarket.com, brings in $400,000 a month buying and selling domains. Before DomainMarket.com, he built a company called BuyDomains which he sold back in 2005 for a whopping $80 million.

How does he do it? Using filters designed to weed through the vast number of available domains to find Google-friendly keyword stuffed domains, Mann sifts through the trimmed down results and eventually chooses by hand which domain names are worth acquiring. He explained his method for acquiring domains as he was quoted by CNET having said:

“We have a filter, but I’m the world’s most efficient human filter for this sort of thing. I don’t think anyone can read huge lists of domain names as quickly as I can and understand what they’re reading. I’m a pattern reader. It’s a huge pain in the ass, but it’s what I do for a living.”

After deciding upon a domain to purchase, the process of actually buying the domain is automated. His last domain buying spree added domains such as BaptistChurchCamp.com and ChineseFoodCatering.com to his vast repository of domain name properties.

Mann is a 45-year-old man residing in Delaware who happened to join the dot-com world at a fantastic time as a domain name he acquired for $70, Menus.com, was purchased for $50,000.

What are your thoughts on Michael Mann’s recent domain buying binge and the vast fortunate he’s accumulated buying and selling domain names?
