Dallas Mavericks Rumors: Wesley Matthews Gets Max Deal In Act Of Desperation From Mavericks

Dallas Mavericks rumors have the team giving Wesley Matthews a max contract. These Mavericks rumors seem to confirm that the team is acting in desperation to try to save any part of the NBA offseason it can. A report from CBS Sports late Thursday (July 9) indicates that Matthews will make $70 million over the next four years. It’s an enormous pay raise from what he made during the 2014-15 NBA season and even more than he was originally going to sign for with the Mavs.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had hinted that the team would likely begin “tanking” if it failed to sign DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews. Though Jordan decided that staying with the LA Clippers was the answer, Matthews honored his verbal agreement to sign with the team. That’s not too surprising, though, given how much money Cuban put on the table here.

For a player that is still trying to recover from a ruptured Achilles, this is a surprisingly big and long-term contract. Matthews may not even be ready for the beginning of the regular season, meaning he wouldn’t pay off in the short-term. When Matthews was linked to the team in prior Dallas Mavericks rumors, it made sense for him to add depth to the team, but now the team almost seems lost with no size in the low post. Who could blame Matthews for accepting that much money though? He is one of several really good role players that just benefited quite a bit from an offseason of overspending in the NBA.

Last season for the Portland Trail Blazers, Wesley Matthews played in 60 games before getting hurt. He averaged 33.7 minutes a night, putting in 15.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steal per game. He was a force on both ends of the court, hitting an average of 2.9 three-pointers per game and taking the tough assignments on defense. Matthews will certainly give the Mavs a good weapon when it comes to defending players like Kevin Durant and James Harden.

While these new Dallas Mavericks rumors underscore just how desperate the team has become to add talent to the roster, owner Mark Cuban might still have a good team on his hands. Though it might be tough for the team to play defense or grab rebounds on a consistent basis, what he does have is a lot of offensive weapons that could get the franchise 50 wins again in the 2015-16 NBA season.
