After its much-hyped launch and almost instant dismissal within the blogosphere, search engine experiment Cuil has cooled down substantially.

Hitwise mapped out the startup’s traffic from its first days until now. The chart speaks for itself:

The site’s dropped to number 34 in search engine traffic, according to Hitwise data. Analysts also found the bulk of its current users are 55 or older.

Not too Cuil.

The majority of their users are 55 or older? I'm guessing parents of Cuil team members?

    any more?

I just went back to give it a second chance and had the strangest experience with a search that returned zero results until I went to preferences and took "safe search" off. None of the words were remotely related to anything "unsafe". FAIL.

I keep an eye on it. Their search seems to gain in relevance. @Laura Norvig, saying 'FAIL' is easy. Sending them an email of feedback would be a more productive way of doing things.

@Alex, are they paying people to QA their product? If so how much will they pay me? If not, why should I bother?

Cuil was destined to go into obscurity after the initial hype. You can't make claims about beating Google, fail to deliver and still expect to be respected.

Uhm, my Dad asked me 'bout Cuil (serious!). He basically told me that it was way better than Yahoo and is serious competition. Duh.

Not to mention Sam built a better one in four hours. :D

Somebody should give Sam $35M now.

Well, Sam works for Yahoo.... I'm not sure how Yahoo would take it if he were to make a lot of money on his 4hoursearch.com by just putting a new wrapper on their search results (thus bypassing their advertising)

Maybe he has a point though. Maybe it's not so much putting lipstick on a pig as not looking like it's still 1994.

Cuil was never hot in my book. Lots of hype. We're desperate for someone to compete with Google.
