Denton County Marriage Denied For Same-Sex Couples, Could Supreme Court Decision Counter Defiance?

Denton County is denying marriages to same-sex couples, defying today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States. In a landmark vote, the U.S. government has ruled it the legal right of all, straight or LGBTQ, to be married.

Reactions to the Supreme Court’s decision today have been all across the board. Some have been positive, some negative, and some were even funny, as previously reported by the Inquisitr.

Among the negative responses have been due to a statement by former First Lady Hillary Clinton, who in recent years has allegedly changed her mind after having stated that “a marriage is as a marriage has always been, between a man and a woman” back in 2000. Could her opinion have changed just to gain favor with hopeful voters?

The Wall Street Journal allegedly believes that Hillary Clinton’s view on gay and lesbian marriage sways with public opinion. Unlike Hillary Clinton, Denton County is still denying marriages to LGBTQ couples, and it is equally unknown if other Republican states may be following their defiant lead.

This morning, same-sex couples had gone to the county courthouse to apply for a marriage license, only to have it denied. The Dallas Voice claims that County Clerk Juli Luke’s office declined the application, stating she required guidance from Denton County District Attorney Paul Johnson. As one comment on the story stated, it seems Juli Luke is ignoring the idea that “Federal Law [supersedes] State Law.”

When one couple, Casey Cavalier and Tod King, had applied, they may have noticed a note taped to the office door citing “changes that must be made for our vendor.”

County Clerk Luke wasn’t the only one holding on to the legislation which was overruled just today by the Supreme Court. Denton County Judge Mary Horn also stated that she would likewise refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses, according to Denton Record-Chronicle.

It may be only a matter of time before Denton County marriages denied to same-sex couples leads to legal consequences. As of today, what Denton County Clerk Juli Luke did could be declared a violation of Federal Law.
