Tiger Woods Doesn’t Make The Cut At U.S. Open

Tiger Woods had a terrible first day at the U.S. Open on Thursday, shooting an 80, and things didn’t get much better on Friday as he carded a 76 and failed to make the cut. Woods finished the tournament at 16 over par.

This is just the second time that Woods has missed the cut at the U.S. Open and just the fifth time in a major. The course at Chambers Bay in Washington got the better of Tiger and several other top players, including Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan and Jimmy Walker. Many players have complained about the course, even those who have played well there. Jordan Spieth is on top of the leaderboard, but still shared this critique with USA Today.

“I think 18 as a par-4 doesn’t make much sense. So all in all, I thought it was a dumb hole today but I think we’re going to play it from there again, so I’ve got to get over that.”

As for Woods, he was never in contention, and his quest for his 15th win in a major will have to wait at least until this year’s British Open at St. Andrews. Tiger hasn’t finished first in a major since 2008 and now, at the age of 39, it looks like Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 major victories is pretty safe. Woods told ESPN that he needs to play more and get back into playing shape to contend.

“I haven’t played enough, I haven’t had a rhythm to play. I didn’t play much last year, and I haven’t played much this year. Knee surgeries are pretty easy compared to a back surgery, the recovery time. And for some reason, it’s just a lot harder dealing with a nerve than a joint.”

Not only did Tiger play poorly, but someone also decided to take a shot at Woods. As reported earlier here at the Inquisitr someone hired a plane to fly over the course with a banner that had one word, cheater.

Woods free fall from the top of the golf world has been one of the sports world’s biggest plummets ever. Fans keep waiting for the old Tiger Woods to roar back and make a charge on a Sunday, but time and again they are disappointed. Woods probably needs to swallow his pride a bit and go back to one of his old swing coaches. Woods won majors with both Butch Harmon and Hank Haney helping with his swing. Why Tiger wouldn’t want to try something that worked so well in the past is a mystery.

One thing is crystal clear: Tiger Woods isn’t a top player anymore. Woods is still an attraction, but more in a side show kind of way. Spieth and Rory McIlroy are who people come to see to watch great golf, not Tiger.
