Dell Officially Exits US Smartphone Market

Dell on Wednesday officially announced that it was exiting the US smartphone market. According to the company the Android based Venue and Windows Phone-based Venue Pro have “run their course.”

The announcement is only targeted at the US market while the Venue line will continue to sell in other countries. Dell also announced the Dell Streak Pro 101DL for Japan towards the end of 2011, that device is the company’s first high-end smartphone.

Dell attempted to break through in the Smartphone market with the Dell Aero, however the company’s next release, the Android-tablet based device known as the Dell Streak 5 showed that the company didn’t have a proper strategy for the US market.

In some cases Dell would pre-announce a device months in advance only to release those smartphones late and with older versions of their mobile operating systems.

Dell also failed to offer mobile OS upgrades for users which in turn led to outdated devices the moment the company’s smartphones entered the mobile marketplace.

This isn’t the first time Dell has failed to enter a new electronics market, the company tried and ultimately failed to win over iPod users with its DJ line of MP3 players. As previously mentioned the Dell Streak 5 attempted to take on the iPad but ultimately failed even after the Dell Streak 7 entered the market as a more full tablet option.

In the meantime Dell will likely focus most of its mobile strategy on the upcoming Windows 8 OS which will allow the company to offer full PC based tablets with a touch friendly OS.
