Olympic Internet Access will be unrestricted

The IOC has announced that media internet access at the Beijing Olympic games will be unrestricted.

The news comes after days of international outrage, with reports that internet access would be heavily censored, restricting the free flow of information from western media attending the event.

According to Reuters, the IOC had said it was expecting BOCOG to solve the issue and said it has always made clear that media representatives should have full access to the Internet.

The agreement does not appear to extend outside of the media, so others visiting the games will still have to deal with Government content restrictions.

  1. Well, it's not perfect, but it's definitely a move in the right direction.

  2. Chinese act in very mysterious ways. I wonder why they just didn't give it to them in the first place. Take away a journalists complete access to the internet and you know what their first story is going to be about. An article did point out though, what are they doing in the office surfing the internet anyway. Shouldn't they be out and about writing stories that haven't appeared on the internet.

  3. “China will still be able to block sites it deems 'subversive or against the national interest', according to a statement by IOC Press Commission chairman Kevan Gosper.”

Problem is they use different technologies to block sites. I have a regular travel site for example that is on a shared server, but is blocked in China. Feedburner is ok, but when you click on a link in your RSS reader to a blog that uses Feedburner links, the page comes up as not found.

I am pretty sure you won't hear the end of this.
