Andy Warhol Elvis Painting To Fetch Upwards Of $50 Million

Andy Warhol’s portrait of Elvis Presley depicted as a cowboy is going up for auction in New York and some experts believe the portrait could fetch nearly $50 million.

According to art experts the Warhol painting is expected to fetch in the range of $30 million to $50 million when it goes up for auction at Sotheby’s on May 9.

The photo was executed in 1963 and was showcased at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles.

Titled “Double Elvis (Ferus Type)” Sotheby’s say its the first “Double Elvis” to appear on the open market since 1995.

The portrait is a silver silkscreen painting that shows Elvis shooting from the hip with a classic six shooter. In the background a shadowed Elvis Presley figure can also be seen.

At this time it’s not clear who is selling the painting with Sotheby’s listing them as a “private collector.”

Nine Elvis portraits painted by Andy Warhol are currently located in museums around the world, all together the famous pop art painter produced 22 images.

Do you think a $50 million price tag is a steep price to pay for an Andy Warhol portrait of Elvis Presley when 21 other prints still remain in private and public collections located all over the world?
