Derek Jeter Gets A Hit In Final MLB At-Bat As Boston Fans Chant His Name

Derek Jeter has ended his 20-year career with a strange sight — a stadium full of rival Boston Red Sox fans chanting his name.

Playing in the final game of the season against the Red Sox in Fenway Park, Jeter entered to a standing ovation from players on both teams. The stadium, which had a large number of Yankees fans in attendance, also erupted when he came to bat for the final time.

Jeter hit a chopper to third base in the third inning, bringing in a run and allowing Jeter to reach first base safely, the 3,465th hit of his career.

As he stood on first, Jeter motioned to Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who brought in Brian McCann as a pinch-runner.

“I think it is an end of an era,” Girardi said. “I think it is the end of the era of those four guys. I don’t know if you’ll see that in sports again, in all of sports. I don’t know if you will see four guys come along and have so much success. It just doesn’t happen very often. So, yeah, I think it is the end of an era.”

The day involved a number of tributes to Jeter. Before the first pitch, the Boston Red Sox paid tribute to the longtime Yankees captain, presenting him with gifts and a live performance of Aretha Franklin’s song “Respect.” The lineup on the Green Monster had the same theme, displaying a sign that read “With Respect 2 Derek Jeter.”

It was an eventful end to Derek Jeter’s career. In his final home game in the Bronx on Thursday, he hit a walkoff single, leading the team to a victory over the division winning Baltimore Orioles. The final home series against the Baltimore Orioles also pulled in some huge ratings, with what will go down as the highest-rated game in the history of New York regional sports networks.
