Last week, the Panthers sprinted out to a lead and then barely held on to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20 to 14. The Detroit Lions, on the other hand, put in a solid all-around performance and walked all over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. The game wasn’t even as close as the 35 to 14 score would suggest. The Detroit defense was especially dominant. The secondary, which has long been an area of concern for the Detroit Lions, played particularly well, severely limiting the Giants’ passing attack.

The Lions offense, and particularly Megatron, also put on a show. According to an AP Sports report, Lions coach Jim Caldwell had high praise for QB Matthew Stafford.

“Matthew did a tremendous job, in terms of making good decisions. You saw him spread the ball around quite a bit. He did a nice job of not forcing the ball. He did take some check-downs that ended up being pretty sizable plays for us. He got us into the right plays. He managed the game well when we wanted to eat the clock, and he sped up the tempo when we wanted to do that. He threw the ball accurately.”

This week, Detroit faces a receiver who’s almost as big as Calvin Johnson. While Carolina’s 6’5 rookie receiver Kelvin Benjamin has a long way to go before any comparisons can be made to Johnson, he did put up a solid debut, with six catches for 92 yards and a TD. According to a Yahoo News report, Carolina coach Ron Rivera had this to say about his rookie receiver:

“He did a lot of good things and was very productive, but that doesn’t speak to the whole body. His grade should have been higher. He’s got to understand how to finish plays, how to be involved in plays even if the ball isn’t coming to him. He’s a young guy that has to learn those things.”

What’s more, the Panthers will have QB Cam Newton back from injury to throw the ball to Benjamin. The Lions will also be facing a stingy Carolina defense that held all comers under 20 points on their home turf last year.
