Kyle Busch took the pole position for the NASCAR Camping World RV Sales 301 in Friday’s qualifying round, breaking the New Hampshire Motor Speedway lap record, posting a lap speed of 138. 130 mph. Kyle is sitting ninth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings, with one win this year, four top five finishes and seven top ten finishes. He failed to finish two races this year, including last week’s wild ride at Daytona. Busch flipped his car, one of 26 drivers knocked out of contention in a crazy Coke Zero 400.
According to a Yahoo Sports report, Kyle — who finished in close-but-no-cigar second place twice at New Hampshire last year — had this to say coming into today’s NASCAR Camping World RV Sales 301:
“This has been a good place for us. We’ve been close here. The second race here last year we were a lot better on the long runs but the race was just a little too short for us.”
Fox Sports quotes Kyle saying this about his record-setting qualifying lap:
“I gave it everything I had. I thought I was a little too tight, but I guess I was driving through it enough that it was still carrying some good speed. I got the throttle down on both ends. The lap felt good. It didn’t feel that good, but I was thinking it was going to be a solid top-four.”
Aric Almirola was declared winner last week when the rain started pouring down during the third red flag. Notably, while drivers were waiting under a red flag, Almirola said that he was hoping the Good Lord would send rain. Almirola will have some real estate to make up if he wants to have a chance to win this week; he’s starting in the 19th position.
Jimmie Johnson, who leads all NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers with three wins this season, will line up next to Kyle Busch in the second position. Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart make up the second row in positions three and four, followed by Jamie McMurray and Joey Logano in the third row. Stewart and McMurray are still looking for their first wins of the season. Look for them to come out strong as they try to put themselves into the Chase for the Cup.
NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Jeff Gordon starts in the 11th position in the NASCAR Camping World RV Sales 301. Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. starts way back in 28th, one position ahead of Danica Patrick.
