Penguins vs Rangers game one was a crazy game with one of the odder finishes in NHL playoff history. The Rangers scored two goals in overtime to beat the Penguins. Of course, the second one -coming off a wicked slap shot – didn’t count, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a beautiful goal nonetheless. The second goal was voided after the initial goal – the game winning OT goal that counted – was confirmed as a good goal.

The Penguins vs Flyers hits the ice and the puck drops at 7:30 Eastern Standard Time.

An AP report quotes Penguin’s captain Sidney Crosby – who most consider the obvious choice for the league’s MVP award this year – had this to say after the disappointing finish to game 1:

“You have to make sure you learn from it and make sure you’re better in the next one. You have to get better as the playoffs go on. We just (have to) make sure we’re playing on our toes. You have to expect they’re going to get chances but make sure we’re aggressive and creating things ourselves.”

Crosby was held to six assists – no goals – in the Penguins’ opening series against the Blue Jackets. He didn’t score in game 1 of the Rangers vs Penguins series and has yet to light the lamp in the playoffs this year. Crosby was on the ice for all three of New York’s goals in game one. Sid the Kid’s scoring dearth is far from typical for the Penguins’ star, who has 40 career playoff goals coming into the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Crosby’s struggles have led some to speculate that he may be playing hurt. Crosby claims he’s healthy.

The Rangers and Penguins play similar styles of finesse-driven offense, with the Penguins arguably having a tougher, more grind-it-out defense. Both teams have solid goalies that can carry a team when they get hot.

Some have suggested that the game demonstrates why it’s sometimes better to come into the next round of the playoffs fresh off a game seven win – with all the momentum that brings – is better in some ways than having the extra days off that defeating your opponent in four or five games affords. Benoit Pouliot of the Rangers’ most effective line in the first round of the playoffs, said this about it, according to a Yahoo! Sports report:

“Yeah, we played seven games and the seventh one was a grueling match but I think most of us have been through it. It’s the NHL and you have to find a way and we did.”
