The first ODI took place Thursday, with South Africa winning the match by 141 runs. The win snapped a long series of dominance by the Indian squad, which came in winning their last four ODI series played away from home.
Following Thursday’s ODI in Johannesburg, the teams will meet for a second ODI on Sunday in Durban. The match will start at 8:00 am GMT.
South Africa has always been a difficult venue for India, which won only two of the last 10 ODIs played there. Overall India has won just five out of 25 ODIs against South Africa, their worst record against the top ODI teams away from home. South Africa is actually the only country where India has never won an ODI series.
India has also not won a Test series in South Africa but did draw the last series 1-1 in 2010-11.
It is more than just India struggling vs. South Africa, Shiva Jayaraman noted for ESPNcricinfo, but instead a tendency for South Africa to excel in the ODI format.
“Part of India’s poor performances there can be attributed to the fact that South Africa have themselves been resilient at home,” Jayaraman wrote. “Till late 2009, Australia were the only team to win a bilateral series against South Africa in South Africa. From October 2002 to November 2009, South Africa won 17 consecutive bilateral series.”
