Instagram users posted over 250,000 election photos on Tuesday, according to PC Magazine . Reports indicate that 100,000 posts were marked #iVoted while roughly 150,000 sported the #election2012 tag.

When it was announced that President Obama would stay in the White House for another four years, the number of images uploaded to Instagram was 2.1 times higher than normal.

“The intimacy and immediacy of the Instagram experience has fostered new and meaningful connections across the globe, whether it’s looking through the lens of a family member across town, or a favorite candidate barnstorming across the nation,” Instagram stated on its official blog .

“We love watching people share photos in new and interesting ways, and we’re excited about the potential Instagram has to bring us all closer together,” the company wrote.

According to CNet , Instagram users were also prone to posting images of their ballots online. Many didn’t realize at the time that sharing this sort of information is a federal offense. Of course, this didn’t stop quite a few people from uploading their votes for the world to see.

Instagram also experienced a spike in activity when Hurricane Sandy arrived on the East Coast early last week. Users reportedly posted over 10 images per second during the height of the storm’s activity.

Twitter stated the site received a record number of posts on Election Day as well. Leading up to the Election Day results, users posted nearly 31 million tweets. The company explained that this number shattered previous records set over the course of its seven years of existence.

President Obama’s “Four more years” tweet received a fair amount of attention when it arrived on both Facebook and Twitter. The post currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most widespread social networking message of all time.

Do you use Instagram to share images? Were you one of the countless individuals who posted Election Day photos?
