Forcing People To Begin Work At 9 AM Is Akin To ‘Torture,’ Warns Leading Sleep Expert

A leading sleep expert has warned that we are leaving our bodies exhausted and stressed, as well as storing up future health problems for ourselves by struggling out from beneath the languid comfort of the duvet and dragging our sleep deprived bodies to work yet another gruelling nine to five shift in the dark, satanic mills of the modern workplace.
Getting up for work or school on just another manic Monday is always something of an uphill challenge, but how much more arduous would rising and shining actually be if you thought it was severely detrimental to you physical and mental well-being?
According to Dr Paul Kelley, anyone aged under 55 who starts work, school, or college before 9 a.m. is torturing their mind and body in an unspeakable and horrendous manner.
The Daily Mail reports that the Oxford University academic suggests that any barbaric employer who forces their workforce to work nine to five is running their employees into the ground by subjecting them to a “torturous” degree of exhaustion and stress.
The honorary clinical research fellow at Oxford University’s Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute argues that sleep deprivation is a threat to performance for anyone under the age of 55, when humans can manage with far less sleep.
“We cannot change our 24-hour rhythms. You cannot learn to get up at a certain time. Your body will be attuned to sunlight and you’re not conscious of it because it reports to hypothalamus, not sight.
“This applies in the bigger picture to prisons and hospitals. They wake up people and give people food they don’t want. You’re more biddable because you’re totally out of it. Sleep deprivation is a torture.”
Sleep deprivation can lead to a myriad of issues, and all of them are nasty. As well as causing anger, anxiety, frustration, impulsive behaviour, weight gain, high blood pressure, stress, and mental health problems, the lack of sleep can also lead to long-term memory loss and drug and alcohol abuse.
So what’s a poor soul to do when the wage master cracks his whip and they’re forced to leave the sanctuary of the bedroom, when every fibre of their poor wretched being is crying out for another hour or two of sweet slumber?
Manically whistle the famous Dolly Parton about how hard it is to make a living whilst staggering like a sleep deprived sloth to the workplace? Or join Dr. Kelley and call for real changes in the way our day has been for too long structured for the benefit of the few and the labor of the many?
The good doctor has called for society to alter work and school times to chime more harmoniously with the natural body clock.
Speaking at the British Science Festival in Bradford, Dr. Kelley explained how most people are usually sleep-deprived.
“This is a huge society issue, Staff should start at 10am. You don’t get back to [the 9am] starting point until [age] 55.
“Staff are usually sleep deprived. We’ve got a sleep-deprived society. It is hugely damaging on the body’s systems because you are affecting physical emotional and performance systems in the body.
“Your liver and your heart have different patterns and you’re asking them to shift two or three hours. This is an international issue. Everybody is suffering and they don’t have to.”
As a result of his research into the human body’s 24-hour rhythms, Dr. Kelley has called for staggered start times at schools and workplaces, which would definitely create a more chilled and happy society.
The princes of industry and captains of commerce will, of course, continue to conspire that this doesn’t happen, and waking up to the modern world will continue to be what it’s always been — alarming!
