Actor Dax Shepard opened up about being molested when he was younger, specifically at seven years old.

According to reports, the 41-year-old Parenthood star revealed that he had been abused by an 18-year-old neighbor, whom he referred to as a “dude” at the time of the abuse. He also revealed the trauma might have contributed to his addiction issues when he reached adulthood.

Dax Shepard appeared on The Jason Ellis Show on Sirius XM and revealed that it took him 12 years to tell anyone about his encounter with his abuser. He did not mention the identity of the person he first confided in. He also did not go into the details of the abuse, although he said that it was minimal. He added, “And then all that time, I was like, a) ‘It’s my fault,’ as generic as that is … ‘and I’m gay; I must have manifested this because I’m secretly gay.’ I had all these insane thoughts for 11 years or 12 years.”

According to the actor, his mother worked with children as a court-appointed advocate for foster kids. The actor shared that his mother told him about a relevant statistic, which stated that when a child has been molested, he or she only has a 20 percent chance of not being an addict.

He recalled , “And I was like, ‘Hm, interesting,’ because in my mind I just like to have a f*****g great time. But when you hear a statistic like that, I’m like, ‘Oh no, I was going to be an addict, period.’”

Back in 2012, the actor and comedian shared in an interview with Playboy magazine that his drug and alcohol use was out of control, noting that he was very lucky that he didn’t go to jail. He said that he loved to get “f****d up” by drinking, doing cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, and other things. At the time, he said that he mostly loved Jack Daniel’s and cocaine.

The father-of-two has been sober since 2004. He and actress Kristen Bell began dating back in 2007, and the actress reportedly didn’t believe that Dax Shepard would be able to stay monogamous and be a good father to his children due to his past drug troubles.

Dax Shepard continued to reveal in his 2012 Playboy magazine interview that his wife, whom he started dating when she was 18, was terrified of all the things he’d done in the past. The actor’s drug troubles reportedly caused several fights during their first year of being together. Now, the pair share two daughters, three-year-old Lincoln, and 16-month-old Delta. The two tied the knot back in 2013.

Just recently, Kristen Bell appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and talked about her life of being a mother to two young toddlers. She compared her house to a circus, adding that everyone wakes up screaming. She continued to say, “Like, why don’t they tell you that? Like, ‘They are going to wake up screaming for, like, four years.’ You wake up — the moment you wake up, you’re in, like, a horror movie, because everyone in the house is screaming bloody murder.”
