Speculation has been going on for some time that Hollywood was looking to put together a remake of the classic ’80s adventure movie Romancing the Stone , but that no longer seems to be the case.
Before you let out a sigh of relief, there’s more: Instead of a full-on feature film being in the works, NBC has ordered a script for a television series based on the movie, to be penned by Mark Friedman, creator of The Forgotten .
The original film, released in 1984, starred Kathleen Turner as a romance novelist from New York who was forced to travel to South America after her sister was kidnapped. Along the way, she meets an adventurous bird exporter played by Michael Douglas , and an antique dealer played by Danny DeVito.
The TV series is said to focus on a similar female lead character who teams up with a risk-taking adventurer as they embark on weekly adventures in search of her missing brother.
Shawn Levy, director of both Night at the Museum movies, is currently slated as the director for the pilot episode. Levy will be co-producing the Romancing the Stone TV show alongside Marty Adelstein’s 21 Laps/Adelstein Productions and 20th Century Fox Television.
