Famous pop culture icon Michael Jackson was not only famous for his music but also for his constantly changing looks. Jackson’s looks were a constant topic of conversation back in the day and they continue to do so even in the present day.

A new memoir by Jackson’s lawyer John Mason, titled, Crazy Lucky: Remarkable Stories from Inside the World of Celebrity Icons, has now claimed that the pop star’s obsession with his looks had its roots in the childhood abuse that he survived in the hands of his father, Joe Jackson.

In the book, Mason mentions that Jackson had told him that Joe had told Jackson that he had a big nose. Mason then added, “That was just the beginning of Michael’s obsession with his looks.”

Having worked with the entire Jackson family, Mason provided further insight into the kind of emotional abuse that Jackson had to face. As Mason mentioned, “In 1964, Michael, who was six years old and driven to sing and dance, went to work. Michael would remember years later that his father didn’t praise his singing ability after that first performance or his magical moves.”

This naturally scarred Jackson as to a young child like him, his father’s approval would have meant a lot, as per a new report. As Mason said, “That lack of affirmation planted the seeds for future plastic surgery in the pursuit of what Michael believed was ‘true beauty’”.

Jackson, however, never talked in public about the numerous surgeries he underwent and only acknowledged to have done two nose surgeries. However, his constantly shifting appearance kept the rumors about him going under the knife multiple times alive.

In the memoir, Mason also mentioned that Joe was an extremely strict father who would go to the rehearsals with a belt in his hand. Any kind of mistake was punished and as Mason said, “There was never a joyful moment. Joe ruled through intimidation. Even a handshake with him was meant to hurt — he’d try to crush your hand.”

Despite the kind of childhood trauma Jackson endured, he grew up to be an insanely successful icon, but remained troubled throughout his life. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 50 years as a result of  acute propofol intoxication combined with sedatives. His death was ruled as a homicide and his doctor Conrad Murray was convicted in 2011 for involuntary manslaughter as it was him who had administered the drug.
