Princess Diana and Prince Charles got married in 1981 and got separated in 1992. They legally parted ways in 1996. They had a tumultuous marriage and even now there are rumors and speculation that surround the former royal couple and Diana’s ultimate tragic end.
One major reason behind the couple’s failed marriage was of course the extra marital affairs they had, especially the long term relationship that Prince Charles carried out with Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now Queen Camilla. Diana also addressed that affair in her 1995 Panorama interview, as she said, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
While the affairs certainly put a dent to their marriage, there were other factors that played a vital role in the couple’s ultimate separation. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward, who had a close friendship with Diana, mentioned in Hello!’s A Right Royal Podcast, “She said to me just before she died, it wasn’t Camilla.”
Ingrid further quoted Diana, saying, “It wasn’t Camilla that ruined our marriage. It was the people around Charles.” She then added, “And I could never unpick that comment and quite understand what it meant. But I also remember Diana’s father saying how tricky the royal household was.”
Ingrid seemed to have questions about the royal staffers as she asked on the same podcast, “Are they just a load of overinflated egos in the royal household, or are they really trying to help?” The Royal family certainly had a bunch of rules and regulations of their own and they often made various attempts to maintain a certain image of Diana in public.

Photographer Denis O’Regan shared one such experience as he was asked to not use a picture that he had clicked of David Bowie and Diana. As Diana had attended a concert of Bowie and asked if the singer would click a picture with her, which he did, Denis O’Regan had gotten a call from Kensington Palace “saying don’t use the pictures.”
Given Diana had attended the concert with Army Major James Hewitt, a person with whom she was having an affair with since 1986, the Royal family did not want Diana to get any more exposure to the press because of her picture with Bowie.

Talking about the same, O’Regan mentioned, “They just didn’t want Diana in the press. It was really [that] they didn’t want to fuel the fire. “So the more pictures that weren’t out there the better, because someone would have said, ‘This is her at the show that she turned up to with James Hewitt,’ even though I didn’t get the multimillion dollar shot of the two of them together, because no one knew who he was.”
While new and old information keep coming out regarding Diana and Charles relationship, Diana remains one of the most iconic members of the Royal family, till date.
