‘Iron Man 3’ Opens With $175 Million

Iron Man 3 has been setting records across the globe and it almost set a new benchmark in the United States this weekend. Robert Downey Jr.’s latest movie had a $175.3 million opening weekend in North America.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, that’s the second biggest opening of all time. The only movie to have a bigger opening weekend was The Avengers which also starred Downey as Iron Man.

Iron Man 3 wasn’t able to top The Avengers but it did out earn both of its predecessors. Iron Man opened with $102 million and Iron Man 2 opened with $128 million. Both of those movies ended up grossing more than $300 million at the domestic box office.

Internationally, the Iron Man franchise is even more impressive. Iron Man ended its box office run with $585 million worldwide while Iron Man 2 took in $623 million. The latest installment of the franchise has already been playing for a few weeks internationally and has already earned $680,100,000.

Iron Man 3 has seen some great box office success already but it’s a long way from the top. Only 15 movies have made more than $1 billion at the global box office but the latestIron Man has a chance to join that group.

As for the rest of the box office… Well, it looks like most moviegoers found their way into Iron Man’s theater. Pain And Gain took the second spot with $7 million, followed by 42, Oblivion, and The Croods.
