Trailer For ‘Journey To The West’ Is A Work Of Wacky Genius [Video]

If you’re in the market for a film that’s a little unhinged and off the beaten path, then the upcoming martial arts fantasy flick Journey to the West might be to your liking.

The forthcoming Chinese action movie is the latest brainchild from writer-director Stephen Chow, the man responsible for crafting both Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. Journey to the West, which is listed on Internet Movie Database as Odyssey, is slated to arrive in China next month.

The embedded trailer is just under two minutes long, though it packs more off-the-wall imagery in that short amount of time than most movies do in two hours. At first glance, Journey to the West appears to be a Studio Ghibli film come to life. That is really the only way I know how to describe it.

Since co-directors Stephen Chow and Derek Kwok have yet to reveal much about the upcoming film’s plot, the trailer ultimately makes little to no sense whatsoever. However, the imagery alone is worth a look. Trying to figure out how the half-man, half-pig fits into the storyline is sure to keep moviegoers busy until the film lands a Stateside distribution deal.

Unfortunately for Stephen Chow fans, Bleeding Cool News is reporting that the man himself will not star in the upcoming fantasy flick. Although Chow isn’t afraid of directing and starring in his films, Journey to the West won’t feature the prolific actor in a major role.

The film is currently scheduled to arrive in Chinese theaters on February 7, which is just in time for the Chinese New Year. Chow fans living in other parts of the world will have to wait patiently for the movie to work its way to the rest of the planet.

The trailer for the film lies below. If you despise Looney Tunes and cartoons in general, then you’ll probably hate it.

Are you a fan of Stephen Chow’s movies? Are you looking forward to Journey to the West?
