Billionaire George Soros Calls Meeting Of Wealthy Liberals And Democrats To Stop Trump

Billionaire George Soros and other wealthy liberals are in a three-day meeting in Washington to figure out what to do about President-elect Donald Trump, Politico is reporting.

Soros and other affluent liberals spent millions of dollars to get Hillary Clinton elected into office. Now they are gathering to see how they can fight the president-elect and stop him from derailing the Democratic agenda. The conference began Sunday night at the high-end Mandarin Oriental hotel in Washington. The conference was sponsored by the Democracy Alliance donor club.

The DA is a club of rich liberals who pay annual fees of $30,000 and are expected to contribute at least $200,000 every year to groups that champion the left. Since the creation of the Democracy Alliance club, more than $500 million has been spent on supporters of the political left including data firm, Catalist, media sentry, Media Matters, and the Center for American Progress, a policy advocacy outfit.

The meeting has Senator Elizabeth Warren, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, and Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairman Keith Ellison in attendance. Leaders of liberal groups and leading unions also made the trip. It would be the first gathering of the left ever since Trump stomped to victory over his Democratic rival on November 8.

Top of the agenda for the darlings of the left is to frustrate President-elect Trump’s 100-day plan which includes withdrawing from the North American Free Trade Agreement if certain conditions are not met.

The 70-year-old president-elect had revealed that he would work closely with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States in order to scrutinize the acquisitions of U.S. companies by foreign countries. In an October speech, the Manhattan billionaire had said it was crucial to get the best trade deals possible.

“Every trade deal we have is horrible and we should be ashamed of…the people that let those deals happen. They’re defective, and they knew they were defective, and they were done for a reason…believe me they will be unwound so fast.”

Soros, the wealthy liberals, and Democrats hope to reach a consensus towards putting the Democratic Party house in order even as they plan to launch full-on trench warfare against Trump once he steps into office in January. In what has been described as a “terrifying assault on President Obama’s achievements and our progressive vision for an equitable and just nation.”

The meeting would also have liberals gleaning the bitter lesson of how they got it horribly wrong in an election Hillary Clinton was widely tipped to win. Donors and liberal groups were of the strong belief that Clinton would live for the second time in the White House if she targeted the “rising American electorate” of women and minorities.

It did not happen.

Trump clobbered Clinton at the elections largely on the strength of support from working-class white people who escaped the poll radar because many did not openly throw their weight behind the Republican candidate. The role of big money in politics and Hillary touted as a stooge for the elites also worked against her at the polls. A setback that one Democratic loyalist dumped squarely at the feet of the Democracy Alliance club.

“The DA itself should be called into question. You can make a very good case it’s nothing more than a social club for a handful wealthy white donors and labor union officials to drink wine and read memos, as the Democratic Party burns down around them.”

Another liberal disagreed with the finger-pointing at the DA, adding that no group was to shoulder the blame, but rather the Democratic Party needed to tweak its prehistoric approach to politics.

“We should not learn the wrong lesson from this election. We need our people to vote in greater numbers. For that to happen, we need candidates who inspire them to go to the polls on Election Day.”

The Democracy Alliance emerged after the 2004 elections when Soros, Peter Lewis, and a few other mega-donors unsuccessfully spent millions of dollars trying to boost Senator John Kerry’s chances against the president of that time, George W. Bush.

Soros is the major backer of the club, spending $25 million on Hillary Clinton, liberal politicians and causes so far in 2016. The 86-year-old billionaire hardly frequents DA meetings. However, his presence at the meeting and his Tuesday morning appearance as speaker shows that he is committed to the fight against President-elect Trump.

The Hungarian who is worth $24.9 billion is a major target for the alt-right movement whose aim is to clamp down on liberal values, strong ideals that the currency trader has revolved around his life, after escaping the horrors of the Holocaust and living under the hardship of Soviet Communism. George Soros has spent more than $1 billion defending democracies and safeguarding open societies like the United States.
