Derrick Rose Trade Rumors: Could New York Knicks Deal Him To Cleveland Cavaliers?

Derrick Rose trade rumors won’t surprise any New York Knicks fans. The Knicks traded for Rose during the NBA offseason with the hope that the former MVP point guard of the Chicago Bulls could help get the team back to the postseason. The Knicks lost again on Wednesday night (November 2), falling to 1-3 in the updated NBA standings. It hasn’t been a good start to Rose during his tenure in New York, and it already has the NBA analysts and Madison Square Garden fans grumbling.

The Knicks acquired Derrick Rose, Justin Holiday, and a 2017 second-round pick during the NBA offseason. The team had to trade Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant, and Jose Calderon to close the deal. It was a move by the front office to give the fans an offseason “splash” and possibly give All-Star Carmelo Anthony another star player to work with this year. Rose has also been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team that has been mentioned again as a possible destination soon. Through four regular-season games, it appears the team still has a lot of problems to work through.

Derrick Rose trade rumors are something that has been floating around the NBA for years. There were many discussions about the Chicago Bulls parting ways with the star point guard, but no deal got close until it was announced he would be sent to the New York Knicks. Rose had some clear issues with the triangle offense during the season-opener, but he wasn’t the only one on the roster who did. He spoke about it in the postgame interviews, as quoted in a report by ESPN.

“Thank God this is the first game. Towards the end, when you saw us running it, it was just us trying to get used to it so it’s not that foreign. We got a lot of room to make up on that side of the ball too. I got to find a way, and I’m going to find a way. That’s what being great is all about. I got to find a way. There’s no way around it.”

It may be too early for Knicks fans to be consumed by the Derrick Rose trade rumors, especially since the team appears committed to seeing if the new schemes are going to work. New coach Jeff Hornacek is also trying to find his footing with the offensive style, so growing pains were expected with the offense. Just how long the front office will let that continue is another question, as the fans aren’t going to put up with it for much longer. It could also mean that Hornacek is on a very short leash if team president Phil Jackson doesn’t feel he is making a difference.

Through four games, Derrick Rose is averaging 16.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and 2.0 turnovers per game. He is shooting 44.6 percent from the field in 30.8 minutes a night, but the Knicks are getting out-scored by a lot while he is on the court. The team is averaging just 96.8 points per night while giving up an average of 110.3 points to opponents. That’s a difference of 13.5 points that ranks second-worst in the entire NBA. Only the Philadelphia 76ers (14.0) have a worse number so far.

Rose is in the final season of a contract that will pay him about $21.3 million for the 2016-17 NBA season. The 28-year-old point guard will then become an unrestricted free agent who can sign with any team. If the New York Knicks feel that the season is lost and that Rose is going to leave in free agency, the likelihood of a deal will climb quite a bit. In an improved Eastern Conference, that time could come soon if the Knicks don’t turn things around, so Knicks fans should expect to see even more Derrick Rose trade rumors if the team isn’t on a road to the NBA Playoffs.
