T-Mobile iPhone Users: Don’t Install iOS 10, Warns CEO John Legere

If you own an iPhone 6, an iPhone 6 Plus, or an iPhone SE on T-Mobile’s network, you are advised to not install Apple’s latest software update.

According to company CEO John Legere, customers are losing connection to T-Mobile’s network. Top executives, Legere included, are advising users to hold off on iOS 10 for now. John Legere took to Twitter earlier today to announce the situation and stated that Apple is currently working on a fix for T-Mobile’s customers.

If in your excitement for the launch of iOS 10, which was Tuesday, September 13, you already installed the newest update, T-Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer, Neville R. Ray, announced on Twitter earlier today a temporary fix: “restart your [iPhone] every time you lose connection.” The company states that a fix is expected to arrive within 48 hours. (Of course, if you want, you can always downgrade. Be wary of the process, though.)

According to a report conducted in June of this year by Statistic Brain, since launching in September of 2014, approximately 219 million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models have been sold to date. And according to a report in May of this year by USA Today, since its debut in March of 2016, an estimated 30 million iPhone SE models have been sold to date. Adding that up, roughly 250 million iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone SE models have been sold to date. That’s a lot of iPhones, and that’s a lot of potential users affected.

All of this comes at an inopportune time for both Apple and T-Mobile.

For the first hour of iOS 10’s launch, reports were stating that some iPhones and iPads were bricked: A bug during the installation process caused iDevices to stay locked at the “Connect to iTunes” screen. This sort of issue isn’t uncommon for Apple: During the over-the-air rollout of iOS 9.3.2 a few months ago, some iDevices were bricked as well, leading to Apple temporarily recalling the software update so the bug can be traced and eradicated. And while the bricking problem has been solved by Apple, it doesn’t help that so many users excited about iOS 10 are facing so many problems.

T-Mobile recently launched its T-Mobile One unlimited plan. This plan is T-Mobile’s answer to, say, Sprint’s Unlimited Freedom plan. Although T-Mobile’s plan sounds enticing, if your iPhone can’t connect to their servers, how are you expected to take advantage of the plan’s benefits, such as unlimited music and video streaming? Well, I guess you can’t.

What about the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus?

Well, according to John Legere via Twitter, those two are “all good.”

Apple has not stated what the issue with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are in relation to their connection to T-Mobile’s network. Additionally, T-Mobile has not stated what the issue is either. With all of the design changes and alterations in iOS 10, it could be inferred that Apple accidentally messed with a series of codes that connects the iPhones to T-Mobile’s cell towers. Again, that’s just speculation. For all we know, it could be nothing too big and just a small error in iOS 10 itself.

It’s unclear how many users are affected by this, but given the sales of all three models, it is assumed to be a lot. Thankfully, both John Legere and Neville Ray are keeping their customers informed via Twitter, and Apple is aware and feverishly working on a quick fix.
