Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Will Dominate ‘Suicide Squad,’ Then Become DC Comics Movies’ Main Attraction

Warner Bros. is now betting on Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn to become their centerpiece character. She will be the main focus of Suicide Squad before getting another film full of female DC Comics characters that will put her up front.

Harley Quinn is no virtuous Wonder Woman. As Hypable reports, during the filming of Suicide Squad, she was instructed to be vicious. Even when she wanted to insert moments of cuteness, movie personnel kept her brutality raging for the future movie audiences to witness. Comic book fans already know that DC is pushing a more crazed and intense version of the Batman: The Animated Series born character.

By Suicide Squad‘s release date, you’ll see Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn take aim and take swing at numerous unprepared adversaries, but she’ll still be surrounded by the boys, the equally vicious men who form the rest of the squad, along with other female characters like the Enchantress, Katana, and the organizer of the group, Amanda Waller. But the follow-up film is planned to be a superhero chick flick full of ladies on the edge, similar to Quinn. They won’t be like the upstanding goddesses that make up Wonder Woman’s crew, they’ll be somewhat dark and problematic like Quinn herself.

For those who may not know, Harley Quinn holds the unique distinction in DC Comics of being a cartoon character before she entered comic books. She was created as one of the Joker’s henchmen for Batman: The Animated Series. She was a hit and soon became a comic book character, and now she’s a movie character. She made her first appearance on the animated series in 1992. She came to comic books the next year in 1993’s The Batman Adventures and hasn’t left the DC continuity. In the cartoon and early comic book appearances of Harley Quinn, she wore a costume closer to a traditional jester, if jesters wore skintight outfits. But still, the costume covered her whole body, very much unlike what the Suicide Squad trailers have shown. The current costume Margot Robbie wears in the Suicide Squad promotional material is to keep her looking flashy and sell tickets.

DC has also released a Suicide Squad prequel comic book leading into the movie release. The comic tells how Harley Quinn got involved in that well-known abusive and psychotic love affair with that unpredictable maniac, the Joker.

Harley Quinn cosplay has always been popular at comic book conventions, and that’s bound to become more popular after the Suicide Squad movie finally comes out. It’s easy to see Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn costume become the most dreaded request from young girls to parents by Halloween time.

Margot Robbie is originally from Gold Coast, Australia. She started off in Australian soap operas before coming to America and getting cast in Pan Am, the ABC period show about Pan Am airlines in the 1960s. She later found popularity in the award-winning The Wolf of Wall Street, where she played star Leonardo DiCaprio’s wife. This year, in addition to Suicide Squad, she’ll play Jane Porter in The Legend of Tarzan.

Though Margot wasn’t the biggest comics fan before getting the role, she told Oyster how all of that changed once she started hanging out in the comic book community.

“I hadn’t read any growing up, but now I’m obsessed. I read them in my own time. We went to Comic-Con this year and I didn’t get to be in and amongst it because we were shooting, but the energy is insane. People are nuts. I could go as Harley Quinn in the actual costume from the movie, and somebody there would have a better one.”

Suicide Squad‘s release date is August 5. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is expected to steal the show along with the box office.
