Donald Trump News: Endorsement From Senator Jeff Sessions Could Be Turning Point For Trump’s Campaign

Donald Trump has earned a key endorsement from Senator Jeff Sessions, the first sitting member of Congress to endorse Trump and a sign that the party establishment may be coming around to his campaign.

For months Trump has been the outsider of the campaign, dominating the field even without the support of major party donors or the big-name endorsements that most of his opponents had. But within the past week, Trump has earned the support of former candidate and New Jersey governor Christ Christie and now an endorsement from Sessions, an influential member of the Senate.

The Alabama Republican spoke in favor of Trump on Sunday, saying Trump is the best choice for America.

“There is an opportunity this year, Tuesday, and we have the opportunity — we have an opportunity Tuesday. It may be the last opportunity we have for the people’s voice to be heard. You have asked for 30 years, and politicians have promised for 30 years to fix illegal immigration,” Sessions said (via Real Clear Politics).

“The American people have known for years these trade agreements have not been working for them,” Sessions stumped. “We now have and will soon have a vote on the Transpacific Partnership TPP), Obamatrade, and it will damage America. It will create a commission that undermines our sovereignty, and it should not pass. Donald Trump when he gets elected president will see it does not pass.”

The endorsement from Jeff Sessions is even more important given the growing rift between Donald Trump and much of the Republican Party establishment. There are many who see Trump, a political outsider, as a threat to the party and a very weak presidential candidate.

Famed strategist Karl Rove has been leading something of an uprising against Trump, imploring party insiders and major donors at a meeting last month to do all they can to stop his campaign.

As the New York Times reported, some members were inspired to take action while others chose to back Trump.

“At a meeting of Republican governors the next morning, Paul R. LePage of Maine called for action. Seated at a long boardroom table at the Willard Hotel, he erupted in frustration over the state of the 2016 race, saying Mr. Trump’s nomination would deeply wound the Republican Party. Mr. LePage urged the governors to draft an open letter ‘to the people,’ disavowing Mr. Trump and his divisive brand of politics.

“The suggestion was not taken up. Since then, Mr. Trump has only gotten stronger, winning two more state contests and collecting the endorsement of Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey.”

Others beyond Karl Rove are coming out against Trump. Michael Hayden, former head of the NSA and CIA, sharply criticized Trump for supporting waterboarding and saying he would target families of terrorists, which is banned by the Geneva Conventions. Hayden even said that the U.S. Armed Forces may need to refuse orders from Trump.

“If he were to order that once in government, the American armed forces would refuse to act,” Hayden said Friday during an appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher (via The Huffington Post). “You are required not to follow an unlawful order that would be in violation of all the international laws of armed conflict.”

The support of Jeff Sessions could be something of a turning point for Donald Trump’s campaign. While party insiders have tried to throw off his campaign, it’s looking increasingly likely that Trump will cruise to the nomination and could effectively put away the rest of his opponents on Super Tuesday.

With a Donald Trump candidacy looking more and more inevitable, more party leaders are expected to come over to his side, and Session’s support signals that it will be acceptable for others to back him.
