‘General Hospital’ To Air Live Episodes After Emmy Nomination Sweep

General Hospital is not exactly known for reinventing the wheel, but it has done its best to change with the times over its almost four-decade run. That said, General Hospital has announced their May line up. and it’s looking very exciting.

According to People, General Hospital plans to air two live episodes of the popular soap opera. In the age of live musicals pulling in big ratings for NBC, ABC’s General Hospital is trying its hand at something similar — sans the music.

Television’s longest-running daytime soap announced that they’re airing two episodes live in Los Angeles as part of its 52nd anniversary.

General Hospital’s executive producer and writer, Frank Valentini, discussed the risky move.

“Taking such an iconic show as General Hospital live for two days is both exhilarating and risky. I am enormously proud of our cast, crew and staff for all their tireless dedication and hard work that will be leading up to this daytime television event. It’s live television and absolutely anything can happen, but that is what’s fun about this and we’re absolutely up to the challenge.”

Recently, the show racked up a total of 28 nominations for the 42nd Daytime Emmy Awards. The show was nominated for Drama Series, Lead Actress in a Drama Series, with Maura West and Laura Wright both getting nominations. Anthony Geary and Jason Thompson nabbed nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor, Supporting Actress nominations went to Finola Hughes and Lisa Locicero, and Chad Duell picked up a nomination for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series as well. Other categories include Younger Actress in a Drama Series, Younger Actor in a Drama Series, Special Guest Performer in a Drama Series, and Drama Series Writing Team.
