Mom Kicked Out For Changing Baby’s Diaper On Table: What Her Reason Was

A restaurant kicked out a mom for changing her baby’s diaper on a table instead of the bathroom changing table. The incident happened at Brother’s Pizza Express in Spring, Texas.

KHOU reports that Miranda Sowers was told to leave because she only had a table in the restaurant’s eating area to change her 4-month-old daughter’s diaper. Besides the baby, Sowers had her two other daughters there with her — 4-year old daughter, Lauren, and 8-year old daughter, Katelyn. Having the kids by herself, the mom didn’t want to haul everyone back to the minivan to do a diaper change.

Since there wasn’t a changing table in the restroom, Sowers used a restaurant table.

She explains:

“I thought you know what I’ve got my own changing pad, she’s tiny, she fits right here on the chair. So I laid her down quickly and quietly changed her diaper.”

An employee whose family owns the pizza restaurant says nothing was quiet about Sowers changing the baby.

Bessa Lala tells KHOU:

“How would you feel. You’re sitting there eating. I don’t want to lose all these other customers because they see a dirty diaper.”

Bessa’s brother — Donny Lala — is the restaurant manager and tells the news station that customers were complaining. Even a regular allegedly sent Bessa a text message about the diaper change they were witnessing.

Donny LaLa says:

“As soon as you start opening the diaper, people start complaining about the smell of the diaper. Last thing I want is a customer throwing up.”

Sowers disagrees with the restaurant’s account of the situation. She says their food was brought out to them in “to go” boxes and they were asked to leave.

The mom filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau after she was kicked out of the restaurant. Employees at the pizza restaurant, however, are standing their ground on the decision they made by having Sowers leave. They did say that since they’re a small business, they don’t currently have a changing table in the restroom; they’re considering installing one. They’ll probably put one in sooner than later after this occurrence.

In a blog by the Houston Chronicle called Mom Houston, it reads there’s “no excuse” for how Sowers handled the situation and that she should have used a restroom counter or the floor on a changing pad if there was room.

The blog entry reads:

“… There is no excuse for unleashing poop on a room full of people who are eating food.”

And continues:

“Your baby will survive. If you’re skilled enough, and after three kids you probably are, change the diaper on your lap. Then go enjoy your meal at a table where you and your now-clean baby are still welcome.”
