‘The Mentalist’ Finale Ending: Delving Deeper Into The Jane-Lisbon Saga Will Leave Fans ‘Craving More’

The Mentalist season 6 finale airs next Sunday and it will be an epic episode for all fans to watch, according to spoilers revealed from CBS and show creator, Bruno Heller. The show wraps with an entire episode devoted to the complicated relationship between Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney).

As fans saw in the last episode of The Mentalist, Lisbon was planning a move to Washington, D.C. with Agent Pike. A cold case intervenes — giving Jane a certain window of time to let Lisbon know how he feels about her.

The official synopsis for the finale episode of The Mentalist reads:

“A new lead in a cold case requires Lisbon to delay her plans to leave for Washington, D.C. with Agent Pike, giving Jane time to finally come to terms with his feelings for her and decide on a course of action.”

Heller and stars, Simon Baker and Robin Tunney, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter regarding their perspectives of how season 6 ends on The Mentalist. Heller said now that Red John is out of the way, the show can focus more on the “human aspects.” Of course, this means the Jane-Lisbon saga that has yet to be resolved. Blue Bird will offer “closure” by the end of season 6 in reference to a lot of unanswered questions that’s plagued fans of The Mentalist.

Baker said when Jane let Lisbon go at her doorstep in last week’s episode, “it was an obvious progression to get to the idea of longing and missing that person who, when the dust settles, has always been there and [now] she’s not there.”

Tunney added that when Red John was the driving plot for The Mentalist this season, Lisbon was there for Jane. The actress said:

“Once that was gone, Lisbon really missed him. She realized that it wasn’t just about catching the bad guy: ‘I love being around this person and what does this mean?’ The last [few] episodes, [Lisbon’s wondering,] ‘Is he going to declare himself? Is he going to put himself out there? What are we going to do now?’ It’s going to come to a head.”

Heller said there will be some lighthearted twists in the two-hour finale next Sunday on The Mentalist. He said:

“We wanted to make sure that the last episode was as fun and humorous and as lighthearted as a crime procedural can be and I think we delivered that.”

The Mentalist creator said the finale will “please and engage and fill our core audience.” Baker agreed when he said the Blue Bird episode “will by and large give the audience closure, but I suspect it will leave them craving more.”

All season, The Mentalist has focused on the Red John storyline, which provided a huge distraction for Jane and Lisbon. Now it’s coming down to the possibility that Lisbon will move to D.C. with Agent Pike. Will Jane finally be prompted to make the move he needs to before it’s too late?

With The Mentalist returning for a seventh season this fall, this opens up countless angles for Jane and Lisbon.

The Mentalist, season 6 finale episode, Blue Bird, airs Sunday, May 18 on CBS at 10 pm, ET/PT.
