Bank Of America Beta Testing Video Teller Calling At ATMs

The ATM machine is a very impersonal piece of technology. A customer walks or drives up to the machine, inserts some numbers, and gets some cash. Bank of America (BofA) is attempting to change that impersonal approach. The company has begun testing video chat capabilities at several of its ATM location.

The machine works by allowing customers to ask for real-person assistance if they need to perform more advanced bank transactions.

The new system, called Teller Assist allows for some cool new features; for example, the ability for checks to be cashed for exact amounts including change. The system also allows users to ask for specific note denominations instead of traditional notes. While those features could be completed without the help of a real-life teller, the system ultimately makes for a more personal experience for users who desire it.

The video chat service will be available in English and Spanish and is only available during extended hours. When Bank of America locates are open, the machines function as normal teller machines.

BofA plans to roll out new ATM features in the future. Those features will include loan and credit card payments, splitting deposits between accounts, and the ability to cash checks while depositing part of their value.

The new program will beta test in Boston and then roll out to various other locations around the United States in late 2013.

If the program is a success, it could prove to be a valuable service for customers while cutting costs for Bank of America. Sticking a bunch of customer services reps in a call center instead of spread out at various new branches could lower costs for BofA while still providing customers with quick access to a friendly face.

Do you see the advantages in being able to speak with a bank teller directly from an ATM machine?
