Katie Holmes Shows Up Tom Cruise And Is Reborn Herself With ‘Touched With Fire’ Movie Role

Katie Holmes is finally back in the spotlight! Take that, Tom Cruise!

Holmes recently secured a spot in the new indie drama Touched With Fire. And maybe it’s because she is drawing inspiration from the fact that the film’s message is directly in opposition to her ex-husband Cruise’s ideology, but it seems that Katie has been given a new lease on life.

Most of us will remember the infamous relationship between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, who has been a disciple of Scientology since his first wife, Mimi Rogers, introduced him to the religion, reports Radar Online.

‘Tom-Kat,’ as the pairing between Cruise and Holmes was cleverly dubbed, lasted seven years (2005-2012), and it was one of those celebrity couplings that was all over the tabloids.

Both while Tom-Kat was an ongoing thing and now, sources agreed that it was a relationship of the unhealthy variety, with Cruise constantly guarding and smothering Holmes to a degree where it negatively affected Katie’s work. Holmes’ career, which seemed to be a budding success before she met Tom, quickly took a turn for the worse once the two hooked up, beginning with 2008’s huge Katie Holmes flop Mad Money and continuing through their breakup four years later.

Even after Katie Holmes managed to shed Tom, the bad mojo he had instilled her with seemed to linger with her, as none of her subsequent acting roles scored higher than a 54 percent on Rotten Tomatoes… until now, that is.

Holmes’ newest flick, Touched With Fire, which is about two manic depressive poets who meet in a psychiatric institution, is Katie’s first “certified fresh” title in years, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Many critics have also commented on the “new Katie” we’ve seen as of late that seems to be reinvigorated after her new release, saying that Holmes has seemed to be walking with a newfound spring in her step.

“On the promo tour for Touched With Fire, she’s been refreshingly alive,” writes The Daily Beast.

Is it just a coincidence, though, that what seems to be Katie finally letting go of Cruise’s negative influence coincides with Holmes dissing Cruise’s religion via her career?

Let me explain. Scientology is fundamentally opposed to psychiatry, a practice that is promoted by Holmes’ Touched with Fire, and Cruise has shown in the past that he is staunchly opposed to psychiatric medication of any sort. He spoke out against Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants for post-partum depression and basically railed against psychology in general in a 2005 broadcast interview with Matt Lauer, says Raw Story.

So Katie’s starring in and vigorously promoting Touched With Fire, a pro-psychiatry movie, is what one source calls “a giant middle finger to Cruise’s beloved Church of Scientology.”

It’s almost as if Cruise drains the life force from Katie Holmes, and the more she can distance herself from him, the weaker his hold over her becomes. Actually laughing in his face by doing something directly contrary to cruise’s deeply-held beliefs may have been the push Katie needed to sever her ties with Cruise once and for all.

Only time will tell whether this new and improved Katie Holmes is here to stay or not, but she sure is a lot of fun when she comes out of her shell. Exhibit A: Her recent Beyonce Super Bowl half time dance impression. Check it out by clicking here.

And that’s not all that’s going on with Katie. Holmes has recently made headlines for putting the kibosh on a potential reunion for Dawson’s Creek, as well as for having a secret relationship with rapper-turned actor Jamie Foxx.
