Mariah Carey no longer holds the No. 1 spot for Christmas songs. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was released back in 1994, on Carey’s first Christmas album, Merry Christmas. While the song was thought to be a winner, no one anticipated the popularity would go on for as long as it did. Every year since 1994, Mariah Carey’s song has been at the top of the hit list. The last few years have brought several changes for Carey, and this is just the latest one.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” was Mariah Carey’s most popular song. She has had a string of hits throughout her career, but nothing tops what this song has done. Since being released in 1994, several covers of the song have been released. Whether you were around when the release happened two decades ago or you are just a teenager now, chances are you know every single word to the entire song. While it may not have been fancy, Carey was able to touch millions of people with this one little Christmas song. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is holding steady in the No. 2 spot, but it is a little bittersweet losing the top spot after two decades of being the best.

It is crazy to think Mariah Carey was beat out by The Shins for the No. 1 spot in the Christmas music world. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is probably one of the most well-known Christmas songs aside from the more religious ones. According to Us Weekly, The Shins’ “Wonderful Christmastime” has taken the first spot, but it is a cover. The original version didn’t even break the top 10 in the world of Christmas music. Some Mariah Carey fans are completely baffled by this news. Surely, it can’t be right!
While Mariah Carey still holds the No. 2 spot in the Christmas music popularity contest, the top 10 songs are some of the most underplayed songs. Kelly Clarkson, Train, and Bing Crosby are all at the top of the chart. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” will be a song that can withstand the test of time. So many people have it on their playlist for the holidays, and the chances you will hear it will shopping during the holiday season are extremely high.
The holiday season has already been difficult for Mariah Carey. A few weeks ago while she was in New York City, she had to be hospitalized for severe flu. Carey had been in town to promote the season and do a taping for a Christmas show. Typically, Carey performs “All I Want For Christmas Is You” every year. As time has passed, things have changed for Mariah Carey. She became a mom to twins and went through a divorce from their father, Nick Cannon. While she has found another man to love, the last decade or so has been an adjustment all together.

Even though Mariah Carey lost her crown as Christmas queen, she will forever live on with her song. According to E! Online, being in second place is still quite the accomplishment, especially since the song is over 20 years old. Holding the No. 1 spot since the debut in 1994, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has been one of the biggest selling songs of all time. It was some of the earliest Mariah Carey music out there, before she became one of the best female vocalists of all time. It is time for The Shins to have their turn with the number one Christmas song, but fans still have hope “All I Want For Christmas Is You” will return to the top spot next year! Mariah Carey oozes Christmas spirit with this one, and fans love it!
