University Of Chicago Cancels Monday Operations Due To Credible Mass Shooting Threat [Breaking]

The University of Chicago has cancelled all Monday classes and activities following an FBI warning of an online threat of gun violence, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times. University president Robert J. Zimmer issued a statement through the campus news service.

“The University was informed by FBI counterterrorism officials today (Sunday) that an unknown individual posted an online threat of gun violence against the University of Chicago, specifically mentioning “the campus quad” on Monday morning at 10 a.m. Based on the FBI’s assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday.”

According to the statement, the university will have an increased level of both police and campus security on-site throughout the day, including police officers visibly carrying weapons and “other additional measures.” University of Chicago students, as well as non-essential faculty and staff, are asked not to come to campus at all on Monday, and to remain indoors as much as possible while on campus. This does not include medical faculty. Students living in residence are also asked to remain indoors and await direct communication from campus housing staff.

All campus facilities will also be closed, excepting again the medical facilities; the University of Chicago Medical Center will remain open to patients, albeit with increased security measures. Student Health and Counseling Services will be closed. Medical Center faculty and staff have been asked to await further details later in the evening; all staff and faculty at the Medical Center not involved in patient care are also asked to stay home.
