Mitt Romney Threw Cash At Solar Failures, Continues Obama Attack Over Solyndra

GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has been on the offensive against President Obama over the gigantic failure of green technology firm Solyndra but now the Boston Herald has revealed similar flops made by Romney during his time as the governor of Massachusetts.

While running the state Romney threw $1.5 million behind Konarka, a firm that filed for bankruptcy only a short time later. Romney then gave $2.5 million to Evergreen Solar which also filed for bankruptcy in 2011. If that wasn’t enough Mitt Romney also poured $2.5 million in taxpayer dollars into biotech firm Spherics Inc. which closed its doors three years later.

Following the big reveal by the Boston Herald Mitt Romney’s own team had “no comment” regarding his own solar flops.

Defending Romney’s actions one Boston University professor told Reuters:

“That’s what governors do—they have to pick winners and losers. It’s a calculated risk that governors and state politicians take in an effort to get jobs.”

In the meantime a Karl Rove-funded anti-Obama ad put together by American Crossroads which criticizes the Presidents use of public money for private businesses actually shows photos of Evergreen Solar, the very same private business for which Mitt Romney pour public funds into before it went bankrupt.

According to one Massachusetts state senator:

“If Romney gets a little bit of heat because he participated in some of these policies at a point in time, it’s all fair in the world of politics. He’s criticizing on one hand, he’s got to take criticism on the other.”

Obviously Mitt Romney’s investments were nothing compared to the $528 million federal loan given to Solyndra, then again he was acting on behalf of one state government, perhaps given 50 states and the backing of federal funds his investments would also have skyrocketed.

Solar power was touted for years as a way to move further out of the reach of foreign oil producing powers, perhaps it was not the right choice at the time but it was a decision both President Obama and Mitt Romney chose to make.
