Jimmy Fallon Features Rare Performance By Vince Staples And Jhené Aiko

Jimmy Fallon enjoys extending support to young artists. After the Tonight Show star had Justin Bieber explain the reasons behind his tearful VMA performance this week on his show, Fallon invited another young artist who may not be as famous, but certainly has all the elements in place to make it big.

Vince Staples, the California Beach rapper who released his debut album Summertime ’06 to rave reviews earlier this year, graced The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon late on Tuesday night. Of course, Vince was joined by Jimmy Fallon’s in-house band The Roots, as well as his label mate Jhené Aiko, who is not known for making regular TV appearances.

According to Exclaim, The Roots laid down an exceptional live beat for Staples to sing “Lemme Know,” something they tend to do for all celebrity artists who appear on Jimmy Fallon’s show. And while the young rapper delivered a soulful performance for the assembled audience, Jhené Aiko will also be remembered for peppering the song with her saccharinely sweet vocals before finally getting a chance to show off her grittier side towards the end of the performance.

Vince Staples is one-third of the hip-hop group Cutthroat Boyz and first came to prominence with his appearances on Odd Future albums and his mixtape collaboration with fellow alternative rapper Mac Miller, who also funded the project, titled Stolen Youth. On June 30 this year, Staples released his debut album, Summertime ’06, which was received well by music critics who particularly commended the lyrics and production of the album.

Staples is also one of the few alternative rappers who, along with Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Earl Sweatshirt, and Danny Brown, are actively involved in reforming the hip hop scene in America. Perhaps his late night performance at Jimmy Fallon’s show could be dubbed as an acknowledgement of Vince Staples’ increasing popularity in the mainstream music sphere.

In any case, Staples’ appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is being hailed by many as the best late night performance since Kendrick Lamar’s final Colbert performance. Jimmy Fallon ought to be proud of that.

Meanwhile, HotNewHipHop reports that following the performance on Jimmy Fallon’s show, Staples will now tour with A$AP Rocky and Tyler, The Creator.
