According to CBS News , police in suburban Kansas City spent the morning searching for a suspect who shot two contract workers at Sunrise Point Elementary school in Overland Park, then committed other crimes during his attempts to flee the scene and escape police.

The suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Anthony David Grable of Kansas City, was later captured in a residential neighborhood not far from the school and other subsequent crime scenes.

Overland Park police public information officer John Lacy said school was out of session and no students were at the school at the time of the shooting, which occurred just after 9 a.m. and left the two men in critical condition. Both were transported to a local hospital, where one of the victims passed away this afternoon.

An estimated six-man contractor team was working outside the elementary school this morning renovating a playground. According to ABC News Chicago , a fight broke out in a group of three contractors, and one worker shot two others before fleeing the scene.

The suspect then tried and failed to carjack a vehicle from a car wash near the school. Shots were again fired but no one was injured. The suspect then successfully carjacked another vehicle, a black 2011 Denali which was later found abandoned by police nearby. The carjacking victim was shaken but unharmed.

Just before noon, Lacy said via Twitter on the Overland Park police official account that police had surrounded a home close to W. 159th and Rosewood, and that it was in reference to the earlier events.

Just after 2:00 p.m., the Overland Park Chief of Police Frank Donchez’s account stated the suspect is in custody and no further injuries had been reported; Gable had driven to the home of the man who owned the Denali and was arrested outside.

Caroline Sweeny of KCTV5 tweeted that Grable has been booked on one account of premeditated first degree murder.

According to KMBC 9 ‘s Melanie Kendall, police say the shooting was between co-workers of a construction company installing turf on the playground, who began to argue about tools. No children were currently the school building, located at 15800 Roe Avenue, but all schools in the Blue Valley School District were secured as a precaution.

The victim who was killed has been described by police only as a 47-year-old father of three children. His name is expected to be released Wednesday. The name of the other victim has not yet been released.
