Donald Trump made history on Wednesday, April 1, as the first sitting U.S. President to attend oral arguments at the U.S. Supreme Court.

The White House’s official X account shared a black-and-white photo of Trump walking through the Supreme Court building’s hallways. The Supreme Court is currently weighing whether Trump’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship is legal. Under the 14th Amendment, anyone born in the United States is guaranteed citizenship regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

Trump reportedly stayed just over an hour, and the White House posted a photo on X shortly after 12 p.m. ET of Trump leaving the building. There are not expected to be any photos depicting Trump during the hearing, as the Supreme Court prohibits cameras and other electronic devices.

Although Trump had not met with reporters as of publication, he did address the ongoing hearings in a Truth Social post. “We are the only Country in the World STUPID enough to allow ‘Birthright’ Citizenship!” Trump wrote.

According to NPR, over 33 countries also have birthright citizenship, including Canada and Mexico. The United States officially adopted the 14th Amendment in July 1868 following the Civil War.

Politicians weigh in on Donald Trump’s Supreme Court hearing appearance

Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett was among the notable politicians who took Trump to task on social media for attending the hearing. Crockett — who lost in the Texas Senate Democratic primary last month — accused Trump of believing that the Supreme Court must “bow down to him.”

D.C.’s biggest bully just pulled up to the Supreme Court to try to intimidate the justices into ending birthright citizenship,” Crockett wrote.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker also claimed that Trump attempted to intimidate judges. As of publication, there is no indication that Trump spoke directly with any judges before the hearing, nor have there been reports about him interrupting the session.

“Trump can’t rewrite the Constitution,” New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said on X. “The birthright citizenship executive order is blatantly unconstitutional. I expect the Supreme Court to make that decision and invalidate it.”

Trump’s niece, Mary, also took a jab at the President on X. “It turns out that sitting in the Supreme Court with his arms folded and a pout on his face may not have been the genius move Donald thought it was,” she wrote, adding the “shruggie” emoji.

Neither Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib nor Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar had commented on Trump’s appearance as of publication. Trump turned heads after February’s State of the Union address when he posted on Truth Social that both women should be deported; Tlaib and Omar loudly heckled Trump throughout the event before leaving early.

Tlaib was born in Michigan, and Omar obtained citizenship in 2000, five years after moving to the U.S. from Somalia.
