Amid the escalating Iran war situation, President Trump announced on Tuesday that the U.S. would withdraw soon, saying there was no need to continue the war anymore. Later, the White House said that the president would address the nation on Wednesday regarding the war.
Trump’s speech, however, led to rather unfortunate consequences, especially for the stock market as futures for the three major U.S. indices sank after him addressing the nation. As reported by Kobeissi Letter, the S&P 500 was down 1.1% by the end of the speech, erasing roughly $550 billion in market value.
Moreover, NASDAQ had shed 1.3%, and the DOW lost nearly 1% as Trump’s speech drew to a close. Political and financial analysts naturally slammed the President as one user on X shared the news with the caption, “Yeah, that speech was definitely not what the markets were hoping for.”

Another one added, “Didn’t work” referring to the speech. A third one chimed in, “Retiring off the cash I took out of the bank to play poker during the all-star break and haven’t gotten around to putting back.” One user sarcastically added, “That address seems to have helped.”
One user was rather stern with their comment, saying, “The markets need to stop listening to this pathological liar.” Another one added, “The market is so gullible. It rallies every time Trump lies and gives false hope about the War.” One person mentioned Trump’s resignation, saying, “Hopefully, when Trump sees those futures, he will resign. Dare we dream?”
In his speech, Trump not only mentioned again that the U.S. was finishing its operations in Iran, but also asked help from other countries regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s strategic blocking of the Strait, which accounts for 20% of the global energy trade, has led to fuel prices going sky high and has affected the U.S. as well.
Trump’s handling of the Russia-Ukraine war situation and his unprecedented attack on Iran has already affected America’s relation with European countries and now his threats of leaving the NATO alliance over the Iran situation is bound to make matters worse.

It should be noted here that Trump’s primary reasoning for attacking Iran was based on the speculation that the country might be launching missile attacks on the U.S. However, according to reports by the Pentagon and the U.S. Intelligence, no such imminent threats from Iran actually existed, which means the war could have very well been avoided.
Trump also appeared uncertain about his plans with Iran after the war started. He gave multiple accounts regarding what he wanted to do with the country once things had settled down. Now the President has claimed that America’s attack on Iran was never about regime change and they only wanted to ensure that Iran was in no place to launch missile attacks.
Trump confirmed that since that goal has been achieved, the U.S. would leave Iran soon, which he suggested would bring an end to the conflict. He also mentioned that signing a deal was unnecessary now as America could just declare victory and leave.
