Taylor Swift is known for her dramatic break-up songs about exes, and her new song falls right in line with the tradition. Only this time fans are unsure of who it is about: Calvin Harris or Tom Hiddleston? Or does it have something to do with her rumored pregnancy?
And this time, instead of writing the song and killing it with her vocals on a new album, Taylor Swift wrote this new song for the band Little Big Town. Taylor’s new song, “Better Man” talks about a jealous ex and how the pair might still be in love if he was just a better man. Swift was honored that Little Big Town recorded the new song, and it seems that Little Big Town was just as excited and made the announcement that Taylor wrote the song and that they knew her since she was in high school.
Little Big Town said Taylor pitched the song to them and they knew they had to record it , Cosmopolitan reported. Taylor sent the song to them because the band’s sweet harmonies were just what she was looking for.
Some fans say Taylor Swift’s new song is about Calvin Harris because Taylor recently performed Harris’s hit “This is What You Came For” at her only concert of the year. Which, by the way, Swift co-wrote that new song and it just happened to turn their calm break-up into a drama-filled one. Fans reason that since she performed this new song at her recent concert (and the break-up eventually turned ugly) that the new song, “Better Man” was definitely about Harris. And then you have other fans who reason that Taylor’s new song “Better Man” is definitely about her relationship with Tom Hiddleston. The couple dated for a short three months before calling it quits. Us Magazine reported that a source told them that Swift was the one to end that relationship because Tom wanted the relationship to be more public than Taylor was comfortable with. The break-up didn’t turn ugly as far as the public is concerned. So why do fans think that Taylor’s new song is about Hiddleston? Fans seem to be connecting the jealousy-themed lyrics with the Hiddleswift romance and how he wanted a public relationship while Taylor didn’t.
If you think that Taylor’s new song is about neither Tom nor Calvin, you aren’t alone. The Inquisitr reported Wednesday that sources are claiming that Taylor Swift is pregnant and Calvin Harris is the father. Could this song be a nod towards that with the lyrics “I know I’m probably better off on my own/Than lovin’ a man who didn’t know/What he had when he had it”? Maybe “what he had” was a baby on the way. Or is the line “Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I can feel you again” about feeling the baby move and reminding her of the father, Calvin Harris?
So far, Taylor Swift hasn’t commented on her new song, who it’s about, nor the pregnancy rumors. So it’s all just speculation at this point. One thing’s for sure, Taylor’s new song “Better Man” is reminiscent of old-school Taylor and her country roots. The lyrics remind fans of her song “Dear John” that was wrote about her breakup with John Mayer. The two songs share a similar lyric: “I ignored when they said run as fast as you can” (“Dear John”) and “The bravest thing I ever did was run” (“Better Man”).
