The latest James Bond movie Skyfall became just the 14th movie in history to cross the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales this weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo , Skyfall has grossed $289.6 million domestically and another $701.6 million around the globe. The film, which stars Daniel Craig as 007, is easily the highest grossing Bond movie and is 14th on the all-time list.

Sony vice chairman Jeff Blake told The Hollywood Reporter :

“To see a film connect with audiences is always gratifying but the success of this film is nothing short of extraordinary. After 50 years of entertaining audiences all over the world, Skyfall is the most successful James Bond film of all time.”

MGM chairman-CEO Gary Barber added:

“It is truly thrilling to reach this incredible milestone.”

Skyfall crossed the $1 billion mark this weekend but there is still some life left in the film. The 23rd Bond installment collected another $4 million in ticket sales domestically and could eventually climb up into the top 10 films of all-time. Skyfall would need to collect another $43 million to surpass The Dark Knight, Alice In Wonderland, Star Wars: Episode 1, and Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides to become one of the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time.

Skyfall isn’t the only movie to have a good year this year. The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises both crossed the $1 billion mark in 2012 which, according to Box Office Mojo , was the best domestic years for movies in history.
