Rachel Snider is making an interesting claim — that her husband, former NFL star Terrell Owens, actually married her for money.
The revelation points to deep financial difficulties for the former All Pro wide receiver, and another chapter in his troubled post-football life.
Owens made more than $80 million throughout his 15 NFL seasons, but bad money management left him with virtually nothing when his career ended. After a sting playing in arena football and a failed NFL comeback attempt, Owens reportedly found another way to get some money.
Snider, who was married to Owens in a ceremony just two weeks ago, is already asking for a divorce and claiming that Owens only wanted her for money . She has reportedly already moved out of their California home and is planning on ending the marriage as quickly as possible.
TMZ Sports reported that Rachel Snider believes Owens only wanted to marry her so he could get a loan for a $2 million home in Sherman Oaks, California.
“I felt in love… and now I feel betrayed and heartbroken,” Snider said, adding,”I really valued his love and friendship for 5 years. Out of the love in my heart, I tried to help him. We had a secret relationship for 5 years and I married him for love.”
While there is no confirmation this is true and Owens hasn’t commented about the case, the former wide receiver has been open about his financial struggles in the past. In a 2012 profile published in GQ , Owens said a combination of bad investments, child support, and leeching friends and family siphoned away his entire fortune. Owens also blamed his agent, Drew Rosenhaus for leading him astray.
The GQ report noted:
“He says his financial advisers (informally recommended by Rosenhaus) put him in a series of risky, highly leveraged ventures that he didn’t discover until autumn 2010, when he finally demanded a full accounting. And of course there were the houses and condos, which he had always figured he could rent out; they became dead weight when the real estate market collapsed in 2008. Individually they weren’t terribly lavish, but together the mortgage nut is reportedly almost $750,000 a year. The Atlanta house is on the market; the south Jersey place he paid $3.9 million for was sold for $1.7 million in late 2010. Most egregious of all was the ill-fated Alabama entertainment complex (with an electronic-bingo component) that cost him $2 million.”
It is unknown when Rachel Snider could officially file for divorce or whether she would seek any money in the split.
