The Pulitzer Prizes for 2009 have been announced, with the New York Times topping the winners list with five recipients.
The New York Times won the Pulitzer Prizes for investigative journalism, breaking news, international reporting, feature photography and criticism. The Las Vegas Sun won the prestigious Public Service Prize for exposing the high death rate among construction workers on the Las Vegas strip.
The organizers of the awards, named after Joseph Pulitzer (best known along with William Randolph Hearst for originating yellow journalism) showed their usual endemic bias, despite this year opening the awards to online only publications. Sig Gissler, administrator of the Pulitzers quoted by Reuters : “The watchdog still barks. The watchdog still bites,” Gissler said. “Who would be doing this day to day if we didn’t have newspapers?”
