Happy birthday, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen! The Olsen twins just turned 31 after a year of highs (they sizzled on the red carpet at a recent fashion awards show) and lows (Twitter and Facebook users sparked a controversy about what caused the noticeable changes in their appearances as the twins have aged). But when it comes to holding onto their reputation for creating fashion trends, Mary-Kate and Ashley have stayed in sync despite the recent controversy.
The Olsen twins lived up to their reputation as style icons at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards, doing justice to their high-end fashion brand by sizzling in black and white outfits, noted the Daily Mail .
Held at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, the CFDA Fashion Awards gave Mary-Kate and Ashley the opportunity to prove that they deserve their reputation as fashion trendsetters. Ashley opted for a black frock, complete with a modestly plunging neckline and pointed cuffs.
The other Olsen twin, Mary-Kate, chose a long, over-sized white shirt and loose black pants. In true twin fashion, however, the Olsen twins both carried stylish leather clutches., one brown leather and the other black. The sisters have become known for leaving the entertainment world to focus on their fashion label, The Row, honoring Savile Row in London.
Ashley and Mary-Kate have repeatedly been honored for their work on The Row. The Olsen twins were recognized as the Women’s Wear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America for two years. In addition, CFDA named them the Accessories Designer of the Year another year.
While the Olsen twins earned positive attention at the fashion awards show, they also faced allegations during the past year of everything from plastic surgery to eating disorders to addiction and Lyme disease, as the Inquisitr reported. Mary-Kate’s and Ashley’s appearance at the 2017 Met Gala caused a Twitter storm of controversy, with some questioning why they looked so much older, and others resurfacing allegations about drug rumors and health concerns.

The controversy and questions about Ashley’s and Mary-Kate’s changed appearances continue amid their birthday. People magazine turned to Facebook to celebrate the Olsen twins’ 31st birthday on June 13.
“Birthday girls Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen grew up right before our eyes!”
But while the images celebrated the Olsen twins, Facebook users weren’t all quite so positive.
“Yet they simply do NOT look one bit genuinely happy these days!” wrote one user. “There’s an undisclosed price for Hollywood success that some simply cannot contain in their personal lives when they mature as adults!”
Others expressed concern about the changes in Mary-Kate’s and Ashley’s appearance from their childhood through today. One noted that they were so cute as little girls, but claimed that the Olsen twins got “a little creepy” as they aged.
Another Facebook fan contended that one of the twins did not appear to be in good health, questioning whether fame is to blame.
“The one [on] the left doesn’t look healthy. I wonder if they were not famous child star twins would they still look the same.”
One user claimed that Mary-Kate and Ashley both look like “bag ladies,” while another noted their gaunt appearances.
“Poor girls. They look sunken,” wrote the Facebook follower.

On Twitter, the Olsen twins’ 31st birthday was celebrated with photos of their looks from past red carpet appearances, along with some mocking.
“All old pics bc they look like they’re 90 now,” tweeted one follower.
But some were kinder to Mary-Kate and Ashley.
