A dispute over trash took the life of a man and his mother in Henderson, NV. On Sunday, June 15, officers from the Henderson Police Department were dispatched to the 900 block of Maple Street at around 6:45 after a shooting was reported. When they arrived, they found 26-year-old Joseph Jeffreys Jr and his 63-year-old mother, Teresa Davis, suffering from gunshot wounds. Both the victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Henderson Police Department – NC, on its official Facebook page, revealed that 41-year-old Michael Sharron Wright was identified as the suspect in the case. The suspect fled the area “in a white Hyundai Sonata bearing North Carolina license plate KEE-6554.”
An arrest warrant was obtained against him on two counts of murder. As he was on the run, the cops warned people that he could be armed and dangerous. Though the cops didn’t reveal the details of the crime, friends and family of the victims recalled the unfortunate incident. In a chat with CBS 17, relatives told that Jeffreys went to Wright’s home to confront him about some trash cans that Wright had thrown into his mother, Teresa Davis’ yard. Reportedly, Wright killed the mother-son duo with Jeffreys’ gun.
“It was over trash, over some freakin trash. This woman is gone. This boy is gone, over some trash,” said Davis’ friend, Tennisha Eaton.
She also told that Jeffreys’ three children witnessed the shooting. She told CBS 17, “That’s so heartbreaking for the grandkids to be in the car, his kids to see their daddy and their grandmother get killed. That’s senseless.”
Another neighbor said, “She was a nice woman. She let anybody live with her who needed a home. I’m sorry that happened to her.”
On June 16, a day after the shooting, Wright was taken into custody. It has been found out that Wright is a convicted murderer. As per local NBC affiliate WRAL, Wright was charged with the murder of his 54-year-old uncle, Kirk Douglas Wright Sr, in 2010. Wright was 26 at that time. Kirk was found buried in a makeshift grave behind an abandoned house. About three years later, Wright was convicted of second-degree murder and he spent 14 years behind bars. He was released from jail in January 2024.
As per Law & Crime, Wright turned himself in on Monday. He reportedly contacted Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain around 2:30 am and expressed his wish to surrender. He was then presented before a Granville County Magistrate for formal warrant service. Wright is currently being held at the Granville County Detention Center without bond.
This case is an active investigation and the police department has urged people with additional information to contact the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141 or Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925.
