Johnny Depp claimed that he had recovered from alcohol and drug abuse. But in her court paperwork that Amber Heard recently filed, a different description is given. Heard claims that Depp still is an “alcoholic and drug addict ,” reported People .
“Depp had relapsed into a cycle of substance abuse,” challenged Amber. “His drug and alcohol abuse has increased dramatically in recent years, as has his violent behavior.”
But Johnny has repeatedly stated that his days of drug and alcohol addiction are behind him. He pinpoints that period to the beginning of his Hollywood career. In Depp’s account, fatherhood changed him. He has a daughter, Lily-Rose, 17, and Jack, 14, now, but he described his life in the early 1990s as much bleaker.
“I’m a dumb-a–, and I poisoned myself for years,” admitted Johnny in 2008 about his alcohol abuse. “Now I understand things better.”
The alcohol addiction was never for enjoyment or recreation, added Depp.
“It was never about recreation. Not. Ever. That was never my motivation.”
As for drugs, Johnny has been more cautious in discussing what, if anything, he did use.
“I was never a cokehead or anything like that,” he said at one point. “I always despised that drug. I thought it was a waste of time, pointless. But I was poisoning myself with alcohol and medicating myself. I was trying not to feel things, and that’s ridiculous.”
But in terms of feeling things, Depp has been candid about his anger, referring to his “old hillbilly rage” in describing how he sought to develop the character of a gangster for a movie.
“That’s not necessarily that far from the surface at times,” Johnny admitted.
Amber, in her court papers, referenced the violence as well as the drugs.
“Depp has hit and kicked Heard on numerous occasions, has thrown objects at her, at one point nearly suffocated her to the point where she feared for her life.”
For those asking why Amber stayed with Johnny so long, an insider told E! News that Heard had several reasons, including hope that the drug and alcohol abuse would end.

“Amber didn’t want to come forward about the abuse because she had faith he’d get better and that it would stop,” explained the insider.
When Depp was sober, he did not touch Amber, but when he was abusing substances, he seemed like a different person, with the source revealing that Heard also kept it all a secret, hiding her “severe emotional trauma.”
In addition, the insider revealed that every time something happened, Johnny apologized to Amber, giving her hope that he would change.
“Whenever there was an incident he’d apologize profusely and she’d forgive him… She’s now realized that his addictions got the best of him and that she couldn’t continue living this way.”
Although she is strong, Heard became fearful of Depp and the potential for his rages, according to E! News ‘ sources, who also revealed that despite what she has gone through, Amber continues to love Johnny.

“Amber is a tough girl and thick-skinned, which is why those close to her are surprised she has let this happen to her,” added one insider. “But their love is unlike anything she has ever experienced and even through what is happening now she still loves him and wants him to get help.”
Among those defending Depp is his daughter, Lily-Rose. She posted a photo from her childhood days on Instagram, sharing her love for Johnny and her faith in him.

Depp’s representative told E! News that Johnny does not intend to respond to the various stories about his relationship with Amber.
“Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life,” stated his spokesperson. “Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly.”
