New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain is out of the hospital three days after a severe ankle injury that’s cast doubt on the future of his career.
The 26-year-old right handed reliever was hurt Thursday while jumping on a trampoline with his son at a recreation spot in Tampa.
The ankle injury – which required surgery because the bone broke through skin – has jeopardized his season — but the Yankees were encouraged by CT scan results showing no microfractures.
New York general manager Brian Cashman said before the Yankees played a Detroit Tigers’ split squad Sunday that Chamberlain’s recovery is going as well as can be expected.
“So far, everything looks great,” Cashman said. “The risky stuff is all we care about now for him personally to get out of the woods. After that we can worry about baseball stuff.”
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi echoed Cashman’s positive outlook on Chamberlin’s release from the hospital:
“It’s good to see him out, and he’s doing well,” Girardi said. “I am optimistic he’s going to pitch for us this year. I am.”
According to the New York Times , Chamberlain will be in a cast for six weeks and will not be able to do any weight-bearing activity for up to four months. There is no timetable for the 26-year-old to resume pitching.
Joba Chamberlain , the 6-foot-2 reliever, was working his way back from Tommy John’s (elbow ligament replacement) surgery and was expected to return in June.
